Thirty-two years of dressing Melbourne

My name is Clara Byrne. In 1994 I opened a small shop in Fitzroy with one rack, one mirror and a kettle. I wanted to dress women who wanted good clothes and didn't want to drive to Sydney for them.

Fourteen years later we opened a second shop, in Hawthorn. Between the two of them I have spent thirty-two years telling women the truth about what suits them, which is the only part of this job I was ever any good at.

Last year we closed both shopfronts. Not because it ended. Because my team sat me down and explained that the next shop didn't need a window. They were right, and I told them so, which they will not let me forget.

So everything is here now. The same pieces I chose for the racks, the same eye, and prices that reflect the fact that we are no longer paying rent on two streets in Melbourne. For thirty-two years we could only dress the women who could walk in. Now we can dress the whole country.
